POSITION TITLE: Development Associate (New York City)

START DATE: Immediately

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Associate will play a central role in the Institute’s fundraising efforts, with a particular focus on project evaluation, monitoring and reporting activities. As part of an experienced team, she/he will prepare, and participate in project development, write proposals for funding, and prepare written materials in support of the Institute’s fundraising. The associate will assist in establishing evaluation criteria for Guttmacher projects and, to the extent possible, standardize them across projects. The associate will monitor projects to ensure that project managers are working toward established objectives and relate goals, objectives and accomplishments to those set forth in the current Strategic Plan. The individual will aide project staff in drafting, editing and submitting project reports and reports to staff and Board regarding progress related to the Strategic Plan. The associate will also work with the Director of Development to create and ensure accomplishment of an annual development plan and work to develop systems for work flow and idea generation and proposal management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Masters in Public Health, International Affairs or Public Administration required; 1-2 years of experience in preparing funded grant proposals for nonprofit organizations; excellent writing skills; strong computer skills, including Excel, database programs, Power Point and Internet research; ability to construct and analyze program budgets; basic understanding of social science research methods and state-of-the-art evaluation and project management techniques; exceptional analytical and interpersonal skills; meticulous attention to detail; ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and with a multidisciplinary staff of professionals; knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues; program development experience and proficiency with multiple languages a plus. Must be able to travel and work at a computer.

SALARY: Competitive and commensurate with experience.

POSITION TITLE: Associate Editor (New York City)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to AGI’s Vice President for Public Education and journal executive editors, the associate editor will write, edit and review material for the Institute’s peer-reviewed research journals, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and International Family Planning Perspectives, and other publications; cover meetings and conferences to solicit material for the journals; assist in screening journal submissions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree; 5–7 years of editing/writing experience with academic publications; familiarity with social science research and statistical analysis and attention to detail essential; knowledge of the sexual and reproductive health field highly desirable; strong organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, follow through on projects and adhere to deadlines.

POSITION TITLE: Vice President for Administration and Finance (New York City)

START DATE: Immediately

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Vice President for Administration and Finance is a member of the Management Team consisting of the President & CEO, Senior Vice President for Public Policy, Vice President for Research, Vice President for Public Education, and the Controller. He or she has oversight responsibility and is accountable to the President for the Institute’s overall financial management, human resources, management information systems, information technology, and such other responsibilities as may be delegated by the President. Direct reports include the Controller, Human Resource Manager, Office Manager and Network Administrator.

Responsibilities
•Provide strategic oversight and provide advice to the Comptroller on budgeting, cash flow and financial reporting. Develop and implement an investment strategy.

•Coordinate the development, documentation and periodic review of standard policies and procedures throughout the Institute.

•Oversee systems for program management and evaluation and establish new systems as required.

•Monitor statutory developments regarding nonprofit governance and ensure compliance with local, state and federal requirements.

•Develop strategies for risk management, including a disaster recovery plan.

•Provide general oversight of human resources, including personnel policies, recruitment, staff development and job training.

•Provide general oversight of office systems, including leasehold improvements, office services and IT services. Act as principle negotiator for new New York office space.

•Advance a corporate culture that rewards personal integrity, commitment, collaborative work styles and a respect for diversity and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS

•MBA, MPA and/or CPA required

•Minimum 10 years relevant management experience

•Knowledge of information technology and systems highly desirable

•Some not for profit management desirable

•Background in finance desirable

•Good communications and interpersonal skills essential

POSITION TITLE: Research Associate (New York)

START DATE: Immediately

REPORTS TO

Director of Research, Senior Research Associate

RESPONSIBILITIES

A research associate works with a substantial degree of independence, usually under the direction of a Senior Research Associate or other senior research staff, performs a variety of complex research tasks and often supervises research assistants, especially, but not only, on fielding activities.

Project Tasks:

•Implement quantitative data analyses using SPSS, Stata or other social science analysis package

• Implement qualitative data analyses using one of the major analysis packages

•Gather and synthesize information

•Draft project reports or articles, with direction

•Coordinate projects that involve AGI’s partnering with external collaborating agencies in the U.S. or in other countries; includes coordinating AGI meetings of senior staff, coordinating and making logistical and substantive preparations for field visits with both AGI staff and staff of the partner organization

•Prepare for and make presentations at conferences

•Manage and supervise fieldwork activities; participate in designing fieldwork protocols such as questionnaires, guidelines, manuals and letters, with direction from senior staff

•Supervise research assistants in all aspects of fielding surveys, and of processing data

•Moderate focus groups and conduct personal interviews

Additional Tasks:

•Assist with interviewing and recruitment of RAs and Senior Research Assistants

•Assist in proposal development by developing budget estimates (staffing and direct costs) for fieldwork activities

•Responsible for appropriate (confidential if required) storage/archiving/disposal of survey questionnaires and other project materials

•Maintain collection of questionnaires and fieldwork documents, for AGI surveys.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•Master’s degree in a relevant social science, health or demographic field

•3-7 years of relevant work experience

•Substantive knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues

•Or, a minimum of 2 years employment as a Senior Research Assistant at AGI

•Candidate must possess outstanding ability in at least one of two broad categories of research work: (a) organizing and managing data collection activities with a substantial degree of independence, requiring extensive knowledge of all aspects of the data collection process (including questionnaire development, sample selection, various approaches to fieldwork, and the processing of questionnaires); (b) proficiency in some of the following areas–computer programming, coordination with partner agencies, writing and presentation skills, combined with the ability to work independently with minimal direction

•Ability to perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis (candidates with a greater proficiency on one or the other are also encouraged to apply)

•Proficiency in either French or Spanish desirable

•Ability to schedule and coordinate work of a team

•Ability to plan ahead and foresee needs and problems

•Demonstrated experience in performing and understanding progressively more complex data analysis procedures using statistical packages such as SPSS, Stata and SAS; or in performing qualitative data analysis, using a software package such as N6

•Ability to train and supervise research assistants

•Ability to be the liaison with, and to professionally manage communication with, consultants, collaborators, and/or organizations

•Ability to work independently

•Professionalism in performing work

•Effective communication, organizational and management skills

•Efficiency, accuracy, high productivity

•Ability to plan ahead, anticipate needs and problems

SALARY: $40,000 - 50,000

POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant (New York City)

START DATE: Immediately

JOB DESCRIPTION

Assist with social science research pertaining to reproductive behavior and health services (principally family planning, sexual behavior and abortion) in both domestic and international contexts. Depending on qualifications and workflow, duties may include assisting with survey fielding, phone follow-up of survey responses, questionnaire coding, data processing, table construction, library work and other research assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree is required. Experience, training and/or interest in the field of reproductive health is helpful. The position requires good organizational and communication skills, accuracy and attention to detail, computer aptitude, and ability to work well both individually and in a group. Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of spreadsheet, database, and/or statistical analysis software is desirable.

SALARY: $30,000 - $32,000, depending on work experience and/or training.
